Most city codes require that a backflow prevention
device is installed on irrigation systems, fire sprinkler
systems, pop machine fountain units, heater boiler units, a
car wash, multi unit dwellings – per zoning
code, commercial buildings,
or any devices that are required by zoning
permit. This
device prevents any flow from the source system from
entering your home or office water system, assuring your
drinking water will not be contaminated. Be sure you have a
backflow prevention device, even when not required. Check with
your local building inspector for the regulations in your
area.

PUD Information
At
the PUD, they are concerned about cross connection and backflow
into the public drinking water supply. The Federal Safe
Drinking Water Act and the State of Oregon share their
concern and have passed rules and regulations that deal with
cross connections and backflow prevention. One such potential
cross connection is a sprinkler system. State Department of
Health regulations state that any non-drinking water supply
connection to the public drinking water supply system requires
to have an approved backflow prevention device. The regulations also
state that these devices must be tested annually.
The
backflow device prevents chemicals and potentially
contaminated water from flowing back into the drinking water
supply. The backflow device is installed in the sprinkler
control box near the water supply. Backflow devices are
installed and owned by the homeowner within the premises of
their property. It is the sole responsibility of the customer
to ensure that the assembly is in satisfactory operating
conditions at all times.
After
a backflow device is installed, the state requires it to be tested annually to
ensure proper operation in the event of a backflow situation.
An Oregon state certified backflow assembly tester must
perform the testing.

What is a
Cross-Connection?
A physical connection
between the drinking water supply and any material that renders the supply non-drinkable is called a cross connection.
Materials can come from a number of sources: sewage, a beverage machine or a sprinkler system. The cross connection provides a pathway for contaminated
fluids to flow into the drinking water supply. A backflow prevention device stops this contamination from happening by stopping the water from flowing the wrong way in the pipes.
